Kukla in the news
Sherman Rosier, owner of Tallahassee’s Fit and Functional, has developed a women’s fashion line called Kukla, the Russian and Greek word for doll.
His spring line, a series of dresses and T-shirts ranging from size 2 to 10, are geared for co-eds and young professionals. Prices range from $49 to $159 for dresses and $29 to $47 for T-shirts.
“I think it’s neat that someone in Tallahassee is taking that step because it’s a hard industry to make it in,” said Autumn Mayfield, owner of Fancy Pants. “He has a good mix of casual and some dressier pieces.”
His first show, Night of Dolls, was Feb. 21 at Dorothy B. Oven Park. Spring/summer fashions from shops Cole Couture and Fancy Pants were also featured at the show.
“Being my first show, I think it went pretty well,” Rosier said. There were about 75 people at the event.
He is looking to sell some of his pieces at Cole Couture and Fancy Pants.
“It works for the looks that we do,” said Mary Rolling, owner of Athena Salon and Day Spa. Rolling is using some of the Kukla line in their Fearless collection, a set of upcoming hairstyles, hair colors and makeup.
Rosier, who’s Ukrainian girlfriend helped him come up with the name, has been interested in fashion since high school.
“It’s one of those things that I have desire and passion to do,” said the born entrepreneur. “I’m the type of person that I’m not really satisfied doing one thing.”
Rosier has been the owner of Fit and functional for eight years and doesn’t plan on leaving it anytime soon.
In 2007, he took an apparel production class at Florida State University where he learned the ins and outs of design and manufacturing.
Rosier drew basic sketches inspired by other items he had seen and design students completed the final sketches which were sent out to Consult and Sew Associates in South Florida.
He admits he is still learning the business but plans on putting out a new line for the fall/winter season. In three years he’d like to be in at least 50 stores throughout the state and would like for Kukla to be a known name in 10 or 15 years.
